Alive with Poppies

This is a very special poem written by the enormously talented Tomos Roberts, who was commissioned by the Royal British Legion to write and perform it at the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall in 2021. It was then made into a picture book for children and I was asked by Scholastic to illustrate it. It has been an honour and a privilege to be a part of this project by visually interpreting Tomos' very moving text. The aim is to keep the powerful symbolism of the poppy alive, especially among the next generation and beyond.

Alive with Poppies

I loved working on the illustrations for this book, not only because of a deep appreciation of everything the poppy stands for, but also because it gave me the chance to try out something quite different in terms of approach. The artwork was created using monochrome pen and ink with splashes of bright poppy red to create more impact. Also, there is a young boy character who takes the reader on a journey of discovery and a better understanding of the meaning of the poppy.

This title, suitable for 6 - 10 year olds, is published by Scholastic and £0.50 from each copy sold goes to support the Royal British Legion.
